Portrait of a Nine Year Old

Today Ryan is nine years old! My serious, shy, bright, silly little one is growing up!

Nine seems to me an odd mix of grown-up and little boy.  Over the past year, I’ve watched with pride as Ryan demonstrated greater ease in group situations, as he gained the confidence to set out on adventures on his own, and as he has matured in his logic and thinking.

Even as he has grown and asserted his independence, there remain moments when he is still my sensitive little boy, the one who needs a hug for reassurance, a Bandaid to make all things right, or a soft-spoken word to give him courage… a moment to be sure of himself, and of me.

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
“Pooh!” he whispered
“Yes, Piglet?”
“Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s paw.
“I just wanted to be sure of you.”
And that’s fine with me… because every now and then, I still need a moment to be sure of myself, and of him: my silly, sweet nine-year-old boy!

Happy 9th Birthday, Patrick Ryan!
May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow.
May the soft winds freshen your spirit.
May the sunshine brighten your heart
May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you.
And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.

-Irish Blessing
