Making Memories Monday: At Home in the Kitchen

 

Connor started writing his first cookbook today:  Connor’s Famous Recipes.  So far, he has dictated three recipes for inclusion in his masterpiece:  Very Good Milk Cookies, Famous Center Mix, and Bread. 

2 cups of milk

3 tsp. of sugar

3 cups of flour

1 cup coconut milk

Cook for 30 minutes at 200.  Let sit for 2 minutes.

1/3 tsp salt

4 cups flour

1 cup coconut milk

1 cup almond milk

1 cup of glaze

1 cup of chocolate

2 cups of candy

3 cups of licorice

Cook for 40 minutes in 400 degree oven.

1 cup sugar

1/8 tsp salt

1 cup milk

2 cups flour

Cook for 5 hours.  Let sit for 10 minutes

That’s it… those are the recipes.  He was so excited, so proud, so anxious to try out his delicious creations… 

We didn’t get to prepare one of his masterpieces today, but we will. 

Ryan and Connor have been helping out in the kitchen ever since they were tots… and clearly they’ve learned a thing or two.  For while Connor’s recipes may be missing a few ingredients, they do show that he has been paying attention when we cook together.  He knows the primary ingredients in baked goods:  flour, sugar, some sort of liquid, and a pinch of salt to bring out the flavor; he knows that foods bake at different temperatures, for different times, and that it’s best to let them sit for a few minutes before digging in; he knows that his brother is allergic to casein (milk protein) and that coconut milk and almond milk are substitutes Ryan can have; and he knows that everything tastes better with a little chocolate added to the mix!

 It’s little things like Connor’s first cookbook that remind me how important it is to include the boys in the things I do every day, things that often times it would be easier to do without them.  When the boys help me in the kitchen, it takes longer, there is more mess, and there are more egg shells in the cookies, but we are spending time together and we are having fun.  We talk, I teach, they learn, and then they run off to do something else leaving me to sigh and finish on my own.  Of course, they always reappear just in time for the taste test of their efforts.

When the boys help me in the kitchen, we are making memories!  And if they’re anything like their Dad, they’ll take their fond memories and their gourmet culinary skills with them when they leave my kitchen for one of their own… and their wives will love them for it!
