Out of the Mouths of Babes: Our Government

There is a bridge on the road to my parents’ home in New Jersey.  Ten years ago, it washed out in a Spring flood.  It was replaced with a temporary bridge… that has stood in that spot for the ten years since.  Recently, construction for a new permanent bridge was begun.  It is being funded by the Government Stimulus Plan, according to a large sign near the construction site.
This is all I told my six-year-old.  I promise!
This is the conversation he had with his Grandmother as they waited to pass the one-lane road, over a new temporary bridge,  where construction of the new permanent bridge  is currently on-going:
Grandma, why did they build a temporary bridge when the first bridge washed out?  They should have just built a permanent bridge then.  It would have cost less to build the permanent bridge then.  Now, it is going to cost more to build it.  It is a waste of money.  I guess our government just likes to waste money.
Where does a six-year-old come up with ideas like this?  I swear I don’t know!  (and I say that with complete sincerity, not at all tongue-and-cheek).
