DO NOT Let it Snow!
On my thirteenth birthday, my family moved from Southern Maryland to North-Western New Jersey, to a house near the top of “God’s Mountain,” so dubbed by our neighbors who claimed it snowed on top of our mountain when it wasn’t snowing anywhere else in the county (and it did!). It was a lovely mountain with beautiful lakes, forests of trees, long winters, star-filled nights, and short swim seasons. I learned to ski, to ice skate, and to drive in the snow. (I took the road portion of my driver’s test in a snowstorm, k-turning between snow piled on both sides of the road). And then, I went to college in Virginia and moved to Florida…. for eleven years… and I missed the mountain… and the snow.
Then three years ago, I moved with my family to Northern Virginia. It wasn’t quite God’s Mountain, but we did have snow from time to time. Our Florida boys complained about the cold EVERY day, except on snow days. From the very first day, they LOVED the snow; they LOVED building snowmen and igloos, sledding, and having snowball wars. They learned to ski, they learned to ice skate… they haven’t learned to drive in the snow, but that’s alright, neither have many of the drivers in the area.

The boys have been really excited about the snow this winter – it has snowed more this year than in the last three years combined! But today, even my little snow babies have said, “Enough is enough!” After the 30 inches of snow this weekend, on top of the 4-6 inches still on the ground from an earlier storm, the snow is too deep to play in, all of their activities have been canceled since Thursday, and there’s been no mail since Friday – my kids LOVE checking the mail every day! And now, the weather forecast is predicting snow again… a 100% chance of snow from tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10am until Wednesday around 7pm… with 10 to 20 inches expected! I don’t know if our little neighborhood can handle another 10 inches of snow! There’s already snow piled in every available space.
